Recent years have witnessed the establishment of the concordance cosmology. Under the Cold Dark Matter scenario, cosmic structures are characteristic of dark matter haloes embedded in the cosmic web. Galaxies are though to form at the center of dark matter haloes via gas cooling and fragmentation. Various models and numerical simulations have been developed to model the formation and evolution of galaxies. Observation of the galaxy population and local group are used to constrain the cold dark matter model on large and small scales.
It seems that we now have a ‘beautiful and successful’ theory for the formation of large-scales structures and galaxies. However, there are still open questions: the nature of dark matter and dark energy; How can galaxy populations, including the Milky Way and Local Group, set constraints on the nature of dark matter and models for galaxy formation ? How to produce realistic galaxies as observed from numerical simulations? What is the role of black holes in quenching star formation? We hope to bring both observers and theorists in these broad range of areas together to foster new insights into these problem.
