Dr Maiden joined the school’s Virtual Academic Center as a full time teaching faculty in August 2017 teaching in both the DSW and MSW programs. Prior to his ‘migration to the clouds,’ from 2010-17, Dr Maiden served as Executive Vice Dean and Professor with operational responsibility for a top-ranked, and the largest graduate school of social work in the United States, with 3,200 MSW students in five academic centers. He is also a faculty member in the Department of Social Change and Innovation. He spearheaded the development of the school’s military social work, created the San Diego Academic Center, expanded the school's annual global immersion offerings and led the development of the school's Virtual Academic Center, the first fully synchronous and asynchronous web-based MSW program serving a national and international student population. He also lead the development of the DSW, a professional doctorate in Innovation, Leadership and Advanced Social Work Practice Management Complex Systems. Dr. Maiden brings 30 years of expertise to the field of workplace human services. He was Editor-in-Chief (2000-2015) of the Journal of Workplace Behavioral Health, the only peer-reviewed journal in employee assistance research and practice. Dr. Maiden has published extensively in the areas of employee assistance programs, substance abuse and workplace legislation, trauma management, as well as the evaluation of work-based human services, AIDS in the workplace, alcohol abuse and domestic violence at work, and managed behavioral health care. In addition, he has authored numerous articles and book chapters on employee assistance, workplace behavioral health, occupational social work and international program development. Dr. Maiden is editor and contributing author of: The Transformation of Social Work Education through Virtual Learning (in progress); Global Perspectives of Employee Assistance Programs (w/D. Sharar); Distance Learning and Online Education in Social Work Education (w/P. Kurzman); Labor Contributions to Workplace Human Services (w/P. Kurzman); The Older Worker and the Changing Labor Market: New Challenges for the Workplace (w/J. Gonyea); Employee Assistance Programs in Higher Education (w/S. Phillips); Workplace Disaster Preparedness & Disaster Management (w/R. Paul & T. Thompson); The Integration of Employee Assistance, Work/Life and Wellness (w/ M. Attridge & P. Herlihy); Global Perspectives of Occupational Social Work; Employee Assistance Services in the New South Africa; and Employee Assistance Programs in South Africa. He also has extensive international experience and has twice been the recipient of Senior Fulbright Scholar awards to Russia and South Africa with a focus on workplace substance abuse and workplace violence. Dr. Maiden is also the recipient of the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Employee Assistance Professionals Association and the 2015 Outstanding Leadership in the Profession, given by the Employee Assistance Society of North America. He has presented papers and conducted trainings at many national and international conferences, and has trained and consulted on a wide range of workplace issues related to reintegrating veterans to the workplace and higher education, substance abuse, violence, workplace trauma, a drug-free workplace, managed care, HIV/AIDS, occupational social work online curriculum development and quality assurance in employee assistance programs. Prior academic appointments include director of the school of social work; provost senior faculty fellow; director, Center for Community Partnerships; and MSW coordinator at the University of Central Florida; and chair of occupational social work at the University of Illinois-Chicago, Jane Addams College of Social Work. Dr. Maiden serves on the Commission on Accreditation(COA), which is affiliated with the Council on Social Work Education. He is also on COA’s committees to develop accreditation standards for online social work programs and accreditation standards for re-emerging DSW programs (practice doctorates). Dr. Maiden was born and raised in Zimbabwe, Africa and is a naturalized U.S. citizen. He completed his professional social work education with a masters from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Social Work and a PhD in social policy and administration from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Scchool of Social Work.
